Complete Guide To London With Kids 2026
You’ve booked your flights to London for a family vacation. Now what?
Now comes the fun part, deciding how to make the most of your family trip! Here is my complete guide to a kid-friendly London with a local’s insight on worthwhile attractions that will be a sure hit for children and adults alike.
Maybe it is because I am an expat and a mum of two, I am constantly looking to introduce the kids to various aspects of London. We love playing tourists in our own city. The girls are often fascinated by what they see – often drawing links to what they’re learning in school or even from movies like Paddington. It’s a wonderful moment for me to experience it with them with the same level of enthusiasm.
Exploring London With Kids
London is a pretty kid-friendly city, particularly in the more touristy parts. You’ll find that at a lot of the major attractions there will be something called a “buggy park” which is basically an area where you can park or store a stroller. Almost all attractions will have a baby changing station or room. A well equipped playground also never feels too far away. If your kids are a little older then London will be all the more convenient.
What makes London a fantastic destination to visit with kids – aside from a wealth of culture rich experiences – is the ease of getting around, the number of family-friendly run activities in various “grown up” attractions, and literally there is something for everyone.
For the animal-obsessed kid, The Natural History Museum and London Zoo are a sure bet. Those who are interested in theatre a visit to the Shakespeare Globe Theatre or a show at the West End is a must. There is also a fabulous open air theatre in Regent’s Park in the summer months with a good lineup of shows for children of different age ranges. For the younger kids who love vehicles and transport do not miss the interactive London Transport Museum or London Canal Museum.
Top Kid Friendly Things To Do In London
Having experienced many kid-friendly attractions in London I can say that they are not all equal. There are great activities that are solely for the benefit and amusement for the children. Those are great because let’s face it, we are happy when the kids are happy. But when I think back to our travels as a family, it’s the shared experiences where all four of us were fully invested in what we did or saw that I treasure most. Truly I want the same for your London experience.
In this post, I will be sharing my top 5 Things to Do in London with kids. There will be a heavy emphasis on culture, history and fun!
1. Buckingham palace tour
A visit to Buckingham Palace is high on the to-do list for anyone traveling to London. I recommend making it even more memorable with a tour inside the palace. We went as a family last summer and had the best time.
We booked the State Rooms and East Wing tour of Buckingham Palace which starts as a 1 hour guided tour of the East Wing – with views of the famous balcony – then leads into a self-guided tour of the State Rooms with their multimedia audio guide handset. The audio guide has a kids tour option that includes games like a scavenger hunt and condenses information about each room or object we saw in a child friendly manner. The girls loved the freedom of listening on their own pace and took the scavenger hunt very seriously. It kept them entertained the whole two hours we spent at the Palace.
The tour is best suited for kids ages 4+. Our youngest had just turned 5 at the time and absolutely enjoyed the whole experience. I particularly loved taking in the incredible art collection in the palace Picture Gallery which includes work by Canaletto, Jan Steen Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. Allocate 2 to 2.5 hours for the whole visit and of course save time for an ice cream in the garden cafe and Palace gift shop in the end.
For a family of four this cost us £328. For a unique experience that all four of us enjoyed it was well worth the pricier expense.
hot tip 🔥
There is a Buckingham Palace Family Guided Tour specifically catered to families with young children. These do not run often and are spots are nabbed quickly.
